A thriving and cool capital of Northern Australia

This website provides a resource on tropical living and design for existing and future Darwin residents, as well as those wishing to build and do business in Darwin. The website highlights opportunities to improve thermal comfort and liveability both within buildings and public open space within the Darwin CBD. Information will continue to be updated as knowledge emerges from experiences with the Darwin Living Lab.

The City of Darwin and NT Government, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Government, are already undertaking many projects in the public domain to help improve comfort for existing residents and create a cooler city centre that attracts more permanent residents.

Darwin Living Lab

The CSIRO-led Darwin Living Lab is part of the Darwin City Deal, which is an agreement between the Northern Territory Government, City of Darwin and the Commonwealth Government to work together in delivering a long-term plan that achieves the vision of Darwin as thriving, liveable capital of the north. The Darwin Living Lab has been established to support the vision to transform Darwin to a liveable and vibrant tropical city through innovative approaches for mitigating heat impacts and enhancing climate-adapted urban design.

What are Urban Living Labs?

The Darwin Living Lab is one of CSIRO’s urban living labs. Urban Living Labs (ULLs) bring together local community expertise with trusted scientific expertise to try new ways of doing things and measure whether they work or not. ULLs operate in a real place and experiment on locally-relevant issues that produce real and robust outcomes.
